It’s the FRIDAY FIVE! This week, we’re featuring Syracuse basketball legend, coach, AND community leader Eric Devendorf! Special thanks to our friends at @CrouseHealth for helping bring stories like Eric’s to life each and every Friday in the FRIDAY FIVE!
Most of us first got to know Eric on the court at Syracuse University, where he scored 1,680 points and became one of the most memorable players of his era. His basketball journey would take him around the world during a seven-year professional career before eventually bringing him back to Syracuse, first as a coach and today as a mentor to the next generation of players.
But what I love about Eric’s story is what he has chosen to DO with the platform basketball gave him.
Through @ed23hoops, Eric is pouring his experience into young athletes at every level, from individual training and camps to AAU teams for boys and girls. And through @ed23foundation, his impact reaches well beyond the basketball court.
From annual turkey drives and scholarships to programs supporting underserved youth, Eric continues to give back to the community that has supported him for so many years. He may not have grown up here, but Central New York is a community Eric now calls home, and he continues to show just how much that means to him.
That’s one of the things I love about the FRIDAY FIVE. We might know someone for what they’ve accomplished, but there is often so much more to their story.

25 years later, we remember.
The 9/11 memorial tucked inside the @nysfair is a powerful place to pause, reflect and remember the lives lost, the heroes who answered the call, and a day we will never forget. Standing face-to-face with the steel beam pulled from the rubble is such a powerful, moving experience.
As for me, I think about all those young dads that lost their lives and how heartbreaking it must’ve been for all those families and children. Keeping them all in my prayers today and forever.

SWIPE for @nysfair after dark 🌖 it was 2:47AM and I had just finished my project for the Fair Team. Just as I was packing up my drone, I looked around…it was the quietest I had ever heard the Fair. Perfectly still. Peaceful, really. I knew I had to capture it in that moment. Not before, of course, the wonderful New York State Trooper team stopped me to make sure I had permission to be there (I did)… Always impressed by their professionalism and service. It’s the FRIDAY FIVE! This week, we’re featuring Dr. Viren Kaul, or as most people know him, VK, Chief of Medicine at Crouse Health!
As Chief of Medicine, VK plays an important role in caring for our community and helping lead the physicians and medical teams who do the same every single day.
One of the things I’ve also admired about VK is his ability to connect with people well beyond the walls of the hospital. Through @drvirenkaul, he’s built his own online community and following, using his platform to share knowledge, perspective, and a little bit of life along the way. In a world where medicine can sometimes feel complicated or intimidating, there’s something pretty powerful about a physician who makes an effort to connect with people where they are.
And while putting together this week’s FRIDAY FIVE, I enjoyed getting to know even more about the person beyond the title. VK has a genuine love for Central New York, the people who call it home, and the community he and his family have made their own.
He lives in LaFayette and, despite a career that comes with some pretty significant responsibilities, you quickly get the sense that VK really appreciates the people, places, and simple things that make life here special.
That’s one of my favorite things about the FRIDAY FIVE.
Getting beyond what someone does and learning a little more about who they are and what inspires them.

Erie Boulevard used to be UNDERWATER.
The Erie Canal once flowed straight through downtown Syracuse before that section was filled in during the 1920s.
But here’s the part worth remembering: the Erie Canal isn’t just our history. It’s still here.
More than 200 years later, you can still walk it, bike it, paddle it, cruise it and explore the communities that grew up along it...all across Central New York and beyond.

Growing up, a trip to Beak & Skiff was one of the BEST parts of fall. The wagon ride into the orchard. The honey bees in the General Store. As a kid, those were the HIGHS.
And now, there’s something NEW for the next generation to get excited about.
The Apple Grove Adventure Park… it’s a kids dream. And opens THIS SATURDAY! With more than 20 attractions… inflatable jump pads, ziplines, a super slide, trike track and so much more…a whole new kind of family tradition is waiting at Beak & Skiff. And I have a feeling kids are going to remember this one, too.
